Abstract:
This paper describes a revolutionary digital approach (AstroHD) to threedimensional
dataset storage and modeling, particularly for gravitational, magnetic field and
atmospheric data. Since gravitational and atmospheric modeling represent a large
percentage of CPU requirements in high-fidelity astrodynamics simulations, efficiency gains
in such modeling can enable substantial accuracy gains while maintaining the same CPU
expenditure. Limitations and assumptions of the AstroHD methodology are discussed, and
run time and accuracy performance are compared for a 10-day orbit propagation test case.
Finally, application of the AstroHD tool set to a sample orbital breakup fragmentation event
is examined.
