Description:

In June 2025, the newly launched Russian satellite Cosmos 2588 began shadowing USA 338 in low Earth orbit, approaching as close as 70-80 km. By September 2025, Cosmos 2588 executed at least two maneuvers to elevate its altitude by about 6.4 km, which was more substantial than typical maintenance adjustments, while staying nearly aligned in plane with USA 338. COSMOS 2588 is regarded as part of Russia's Nivelir inspection lineup and has been deemed a potential space weapon by U.S. authorities.
